iPhone tracker tag for a coat pocket: what it can do

Orbit Tag style scene of a coat draped on a fence rail with gloves above it, a faint bonfire glow in the dusk

An iPhone tracker tag for a coat pocket is a coin-sized Bluetooth beacon that sits inside a garment and shows up in the Items tab of Find My beside your other tagged things. This guide defines how it behaves when the coat is set down at an evening out, which controls matter, and what the Orbit Tag cannot do.

What is an iPhone tracker tag for a coat pocket?

It is an ordinary Find My tag, used as a coat's name badge you can ring. Nothing about it is made for clothing. The tag is 36.3 mm square and 9 mm thick, weighs about 10 g and has no loop, so it lives in a zipped inside pocket or a lining pocket. It reports through Apple's network, and only the Apple Account that owns it can read the location.

For a winter coat that matters in one way. The coat can now be found by ringing it, and its last position survives a night out.

How does Find My treat a coat you have set down?

It treats it as a tag that has stopped moving. If you hang the coat on a hook at a firework display, your iPhone keeps seeing the tag while you stay nearby and shows it as with you. Walk away and the connection drops; the last place it was seen stays on the map until another Apple device passes it.

A busy field is useful here, because phones in the crowd relay sightings. A quiet footpath is not, and the pin may be hours old. Read the time on the item, not just the position.

Which settings matter for a coat?

Three: the name, the left-behind alert and sound.

  1. Name the tag for the coat, such as "Navy parka", so it does not disappear among six items called Tag.
  2. In the item's Notify When Left Behind, switch it on and add your home as a trusted location, otherwise the alert fires on your own doorstep.
  3. Test Play Sound with the coat zipped, because a closed down jacket dulls it.

Why a coat is a harder job than keys

Keys stay on a ring in your hand, so a tag on them is nearly always moving with you. A coat behaves differently, because the whole point of wearing one is that you can take it off. That means the tag spends long periods parked in a place you chose an hour earlier and have since forgotten.

Find My copes with that well enough, since it records where the tag was last seen. The weakness is human. People stop opening the app for a coat, because it feels like an item that cannot get lost, until the day it is gone from a cloakroom hook. Open the Items tab once at the end of an evening out, and the habit costs ten seconds.

Which pocket works best?

An inside pocket with a zip or a button. Hand pockets collect keys and tissues, and a tag there can be pulled out with them. A sewn-in lining pocket is better still, though a tag that is stitched in cannot be reached to change its battery. Aim for something you can open without a seam ripper.

Where do the limits sit?

A left-behind alert only covers a tag that was with you, and nothing here points an arrow. The Orbit Tag has no U1 chip, so no directional finding. In a dark field the sound is your only guide at close range.

How Orbit Tag helps

It gives one coat, or one bag, a ring and a last-seen pin. The Orbit Tag is sold as a box of two, so a sensible pairing is the good coat and the rucksack that carries your gloves. Sharing the tag with a partner, from iOS 17, means either of you can ring it when the other is still holding the keys to the car.

Keep expectations plain. It will not stop a coat being taken, and without a sighting from a passing Apple device its map pin can be stale. If you want the tag in your autumn kit, start from the Orbit Tag page or go to the checkout.

Frequently asked

Can I put an AirTag-style tag in a coat pocket?

Yes. A tag that works with Find My sits in a pocket without trouble, and the Orbit Tag is small enough for an inside zip pocket. Name it after the coat so the list in the Items tab stays readable.

Why did my coat tag not alert me when I left?

The most likely cause is that the tag had not been with you before you walked away, or that you were still inside a trusted location such as home. Check Notify When Left Behind for that item.

How loud is a tag inside a thick coat?

Inside a padded coat it is quieter than in open air, though the speaker is rated 80 to 100 dB. Test it once in the coat and you will know what to listen for.

Does a coat tag work with Android?

No. The tag pairs through Find My on iPhone and is not compatible with Android phones, so an Android household needs a different tag.
